The “ Sierra de los Padres” (Mountain range of the Parents) belongs to the Tandilia System (mountain gathering in the east of Argentina – the oldest of its kind), and has always been a picturesque place that has lately been transformed into an important residential area. It has an average height above sea level of 150 meters, offering the possibility of an excellent view of the Lagoon close by, the "Laguna de los Padres" (Lagoon of the Parents).
In the last years important archeological finds have been made in the area, including rock paintings. There is also the “Cueva Tixi” (Tixi Cave) that is still undergoing investigation.
The Sierra de los Padres has been declared a Forest Reserve and occupies a surface area of 572 Hectares. It is Mar del Plata's first ecological reserve, and encompasses over 200 hectares of marshland. It is ideal for bird watching.
On one of the mountain range's highest spots there is a 18-hole golf course known for having narrow greens and broken fairways.
"La Villa de Sierra de los Padres" is what one of the residential areas of Sierra de Los Padres is called that starts on the base and ends at the top of the Mountain Range.
The Sierra de los Padres also has a zoo, and you can also visit the Museum José Hernandez.
