La Terminal is what the blocks surrounding this reference point are referred to as. From the Terminal all long distance busses arrive and depart. It used to be located between the streets Las Heras and Sarmiento from Alvarado to Alberti.
The building of the Bus Terminal was built by Belgic Jules Dormal, who also designed the Cogreso de la Nación (National Congress), The Provincial Government House located in La Plata and continued after the death of Victor Medrano wit the construction of the famous Teatro Colón in the City of Buenos Aires.
The Terminal building is in high season a very important arrival spot for millions of summer visitors, which is why plans to make it larger have been in progress for many years. Today they have finally become reality, and the expansion is under construction. The new Ferroautomotor terminal of the city of Mar del Plata will be located where the train station is located today and is going to be completely remodeled to be made into the new entrance way of Mar del Plata.
The reconstruction started in January of 2007 and will take two years. When the project is finished there we be a new terminal with parking space for more than 340 cars, 40 bus stops for long distance busses, more than 50 ticket windows, and even a food court.
The new station will offer more security since it is going to have an x-ray control of luggage, and metal detectors.
Maybe this is the beginning of the old attempts to connect Mar del Plata and the City of Buenos Aires with a train that is going to take less than three hours and that is planned to have all desired high-class comforts.
